Diamond Beach, Atuh Beach and the Thousand Islands viewpoint in one day
The east side of Nusa Penida is the quieter, greener half of the island — and home to the single most photographed stairway in Indonesia. You cross from Sanur by fast boat, then spend the day on cliff-top viewpoints looking down on water so clear you can pick out individual coral heads from 200 metres above.
Your driver meets you at the harbour on the island with an air-conditioned car, so you never wait in the sun for transport or negotiate with scooter touts. The roads on Penida are narrow and steep in places; we drive them every week and plan the loop to reach each viewpoint before the tour buses do.
This is a full day and it is worth it. If you only have one day for Nusa Penida and you care about beaches more than famous cliffs, choose the east. If you want the Kelingking T-Rex shot, take the west tour instead — trying to do both properly in one day means rushing all of it.
A crescent of white sand framed by limestone pillars, with a hand-carved staircase cut into the cliff face. Walking down takes about 20 minutes and the view from halfway is the shot everyone comes for. Staying at the top is completely fine — the clifftop viewpoint is arguably better.
Diamond Beach’s gentler neighbour, sheltered by a natural rock arch. Calmer water, warungs selling cold coconuts, and sun loungers if you want an hour of actual beach time rather than another viewpoint.
Also called Raja Lima. A short walk along a ridge brings you out above a cluster of jagged green islets. There is a small bamboo platform for photos and, usually, almost nobody else there before 10:00.
The famous bamboo tree house on the Molenteng cliff, perched over the water with Atuh Beach far below. You can photograph it from the path for free, or pay a small fee to climb up onto the deck.
Rolling green domes that look like they belong in a children’s programme, best seen in the late afternoon light on the drive back to the harbour. A five-minute stop that everyone ends up loving.
A guide, not a timetable. Your driver reshapes the order around the weather, the crowds and how you are feeling on the day.
06:30
Your driver collects you from your hotel or villa in Kuta, Seminyak, Canggu, Sanur, Nusa Dua or Ubud and drives to Sanur Harbour. Bring a light breakfast or we can stop for takeaway coffee.
08:00
Check in at Sanur and board the fast boat. The crossing takes roughly 45 minutes. Sit at the back if you are prone to seasickness — it is noticeably smoother.
09:00
Arrive at Toya Pakeh or Banjar Nyuh harbour where your car and driver are waiting. Water, cold towels and a quick briefing on the day before we set off east.
09:45
First stop while the light is still soft and the crowds are still on the west side. Short ridge walk to the viewpoint, then the Molenteng tree house a few minutes away.
11:15
Clifftop viewpoint first, then the staircase down for anyone who wants to stand on the sand. Take your time — this is the longest stop of the day.
13:00
Lunch at a cliff-edge warung above Atuh Beach. Indonesian and Western dishes, vegetarian options available. Paid directly so you choose freely.
14:00
Descend to Atuh for swimming and the rock arch, or stay above with a coconut if you have had enough stairs for one day.
15:30
A final photo stop at the green hills on the way back across the island to catch the late-afternoon boat.
16:30
Return crossing to Sanur, where your Bali driver is waiting for the drive back to your hotel.
18:00–18:30
Back at your hotel or villa. Ubud and Canggu returns can run slightly later depending on traffic.
The Diamond Beach staircase — about 350 steps, handrail all the way.
Atuh Beach and its rock arch, five minutes from Diamond Beach.
Thousand Islands Viewpoint, best before 10:00.
Rumah Pohon, the tree house on the Molenteng cliff.
Good to know
The questions our guests ask most about this trip, answered honestly rather than optimistically.
The fast boat from Sanur takes 40–50 minutes. From April to October the sea is usually calm. From November to March the swell is bigger and the ride can be bumpy for 15–20 minutes in the middle of the channel. Sitting towards the rear of the boat and looking at the horizon helps a lot.
It is technically possible but we do not recommend it. You would get roughly 20 minutes at each stop and spend four hours in the car on rough roads. Most guests who try it say it was the one thing they would change. Choose one side, or stay overnight on the island and do both properly.
There are around 350 carved steps with a handrail and a rope for the steepest section. Going down takes about 15–20 minutes, coming up about 25–30 minutes and leaves most people out of breath. If you have knee problems, stay at the clifftop viewpoint — the panorama from the top is the photo you have seen online.
Yes, with one adjustment: skip the beach descents and enjoy the viewpoints, tree house and Teletubbies hills, which are all a short flat walk from the car. We have taken plenty of grandparents and toddlers on this route. Tell us their ages when you book and the driver will plan the stops accordingly.
Cash, sunscreen, a hat, sunglasses, a swimsuit, a small towel, a change of shirt and shoes with grip. A dry bag is useful in the rainy season. Everything else — water, cold towels, phone charging — is in the car.
Yes. Every major viewpoint on the east side now has basic toilets (IDR 5,000–10,000) and at least one warung selling drinks, fruit and simple meals. The cliff-edge restaurants above Atuh Beach have proper facilities and Western dishes.
Yes, but it changes the shape of the day. Manta Point is on the south-west side, so a snorkelling session pairs much better with the west tour. If you want snorkelling plus the east coast, we suggest arriving on the first boat and adding a two-hour morning snorkel at Gamat Bay before driving east.
Telkomsel works at most viewpoints, though it drops out on the interior roads. Restaurants and warungs generally have Wi-Fi. Download your offline maps and send your "we landed safely" messages before you leave the harbour area.
Send a WhatsApp message to +62 852 3773 9888 with your date, hotel or villa area, number of passengers and the tour you want. You get a fixed quote back, usually within 15 minutes. No deposit and no credit card are needed — you pay the driver in cash or by bank transfer on the day of the trip.
Yes. Every driver speaks conversational English, and we have drivers who speak Japanese (日本語対応). Japanese-speaking drivers are a smaller team, so please mention it when you book so we can reserve the right person for your date.
Pickup and drop-off are included from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. Pickups from Uluwatu, Amed, Candidasa, Lovina or Munduk are possible with a small surcharge for the extra distance — just ask when you book.
Bali rain usually passes within an hour, so we simply reorder the stops and wait it out somewhere dry rather than cancel. For airport pickups we track your flight number and wait free of charge if you land late. Cancelling for genuine bad weather or a missed flight carries no fee.
