Monkey Forest, Tegallalang rice terraces, temples and art markets
Ubud is the cultural centre of Bali and the easiest full day on the island: no hiking, no boats, no 2 am alarm. Temples, rice terraces, wood carvers, a forest full of macaques and some of the best food in Indonesia, all within a 30-minute radius.
The catch is traffic and timing. The drive up from Kuta or Canggu takes 1.5–2 hours, Monkey Forest is pleasant at 09:00 and a crush at noon, and Tegallalang photographs beautifully in the morning and flatly at 14:00. A driver who knows the sequence turns a frustrating day into an easy one.
Your car and driver are yours for the whole day. Change the order, drop a stop, sit longer over lunch, add a swing or a waterfall — nothing is fixed and there is no group waiting on you.
Twelve hectares of jungle temple complex with around 1,200 long-tailed macaques, moss-covered statues and a dragon bridge over a ravine. Wonderfully atmospheric, genuinely wild, and the monkeys will absolutely go through your bag if you let them.
The classic layered paddy valley, carved into the hillside and irrigated by the thousand-year-old subak system. Walk down among the terraces, stop for coffee on the rim, and be there before 10:00 for the good light.
An 11th-century water temple where Balinese Hindus queue at 30 spouts for purification. You can join the ritual bathing with a sarong and a local guide, or simply watch from the walkway. Deeply moving either way.
The covered market opposite Puri Saren Agung palace, stacked with batik, baskets, sarongs and wood carving. Bargain politely and expect to settle at around half the opening price.
A paved path along a narrow green ridge between two rivers — about 45 minutes out and back, and the most pleasant free thing to do in Ubud. Best early morning or late afternoon.
A wide, powerful waterfall 20 minutes from Ubud with a swimmable pool and a short staircase down. The easiest waterfall to add to an Ubud day.
A guide, not a timetable. Your driver reshapes the order around the weather, the crowds and how you are feeling on the day.
08:00
Pickup from your hotel or villa. Earlier is better — you are driving against the morning traffic either way.
09:30
First stop on the way up while it is still quiet. Twenty minutes of steps down, a swim if you fancy it, and a viewpoint café at the top.
10:45
Walk into the terraces, photos from the rim, optional swing or coffee overlooking the valley.
12:15
Spice garden walk and a tasting flight of Balinese coffees and teas, including luwak coffee if you want to try it.
13:00
Warung, rice-field view restaurant or vegan café — tell your driver the style and budget and he will take you somewhere good rather than somewhere that pays commission.
14:30
Ninety minutes in the sanctuary. Your driver holds anything the monkeys might steal and waits at the exit gate.
16:00
The palace courtyard, the market for souvenirs, and Jalan Hanoman for the good coffee and boutiques.
17:00
Drive back south, or stay in Ubud for a Legong dance performance at the palace and make your own way home.
Around 1,200 macaques live in the Monkey Forest.
Purification spouts at Tirta Empul.
Ubud Art Market, opposite the palace.
Tegenungan — the easiest waterfall to add.
Good to know
The questions our guests ask most about this trip, answered honestly rather than optimistically.
It is safe if you follow the rules. Bites are uncommon and almost always happen when someone holds food, teases a monkey or tries to grab back a stolen item. Leave food and loose items in the car, keep your bag zipped and closed, do not touch the animals, and let the rangers intervene if a macaque takes something.
Between 1.5 and 2 hours each way depending on traffic, sometimes 2.5 hours if you leave the south between 16:00 and 18:00. That is why we recommend an 08:00 pickup and a route that works its way up through Tegenungan and Tegallalang rather than driving straight into Ubud centre.
Monkey Forest is IDR 80,000 for adults and IDR 60,000 for children. Tegallalang is a small donation at the entrance plus a fee if you walk into the terraces. Tirta Empul is around IDR 50,000 including sarong hire. Waterfalls run IDR 20,000–30,000. Budget roughly IDR 200,000 per person for a full Ubud day.
Between 07:00 and 10:00. The light is soft, the valley often has mist, the temperature is bearable for walking down into the terraces and the tour buses have not arrived. Late afternoon is second best. Midday is hot, crowded and flat for photos.
Yes. Shoulders and knees must be covered and a sarong tied at the waist is required for all temple visits. Sarongs are lent free or for a small fee at every temple gate, and your driver keeps spares in the car. Women who are menstruating are traditionally asked not to enter temple inner courtyards.
Comfortably. A typical day is one waterfall, the rice terraces, a swing and the Monkey Forest, with lunch in between. Adding all of Tirta Empul, the market and the Campuhan walk on top is too much — pick four or five stops and enjoy them properly.
Your driver explains each place, its history and the etiquette, helps buy tickets, takes photos and can walk with you at most stops. He is a licensed tourist driver rather than a certified museum guide, so for deep cultural or archaeological detail we can arrange a specialist guide for an extra fee.
Of course. Many guests do the tour, have dinner in Ubud, then take a taxi back or stay a night. If you prefer, your driver can wait for the palace dance performance at 19:30 and drive you home afterwards — just agree it in the morning so the timing is planned.
Send a WhatsApp message to +62 852 3773 9888 with your date, hotel or villa area, number of passengers and the tour you want. You get a fixed quote back, usually within 15 minutes. No deposit and no credit card are needed — you pay the driver in cash or by bank transfer on the day of the trip.
Yes. Every driver speaks conversational English, and we have drivers who speak Japanese (日本語対応). Japanese-speaking drivers are a smaller team, so please mention it when you book so we can reserve the right person for your date.
Pickup and drop-off are included from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. Pickups from Uluwatu, Amed, Candidasa, Lovina or Munduk are possible with a small surcharge for the extra distance — just ask when you book.
Bali rain usually passes within an hour, so we simply reorder the stops and wait it out somewhere dry rather than cancel. For airport pickups we track your flight number and wait free of charge if you land late. Cancelling for genuine bad weather or a missed flight carries no fee.
