Bali Waterfall Tours

Tegenungan, Sekumpul, Leke Leke and the hidden northern falls

About this tour

Bali has dozens of waterfalls and they are not remotely equivalent. Some are a five-minute walk from the car park; others involve a two-hour jungle trek, a river crossing and 500 steps back up. The single most useful thing we do on a waterfall day is tell you honestly which ones suit you before you pay any entrance fees.

Geography matters too. Tegenungan, Tibumana and Kanto Lampo cluster near Ubud and pair well with a half-day in town. Sekumpul, Banyumala and Munduk are in the north, three hours from Kuta, and deserve the whole day — or an overnight in Munduk.

Two or three falls in a day is enjoyable. Five is a forced march where you stop looking at the water and start looking at your watch. We would rather plan a good day than an impressive-sounding one.

What you will see

  • Sekumpul Waterfall

Widely considered the most beautiful in Bali: a cluster of tall cascades dropping into a jungle gorge. It is also the most work — a scooter shuttle, a steep concrete staircase, a river crossing and a 1.5–2 hour round trip. Fit travellers rate it the best thing they did in Bali.

  • Tegenungan Waterfall

Wide, loud and easy, twenty minutes from Ubud. A proper staircase down, a big swimmable plunge pool and cafés at the top with a viewpoint. The best choice when time or energy is limited.

  • Leke Leke Waterfall

A slender fall through a narrow rock cleft, reached by a pretty 15-minute walk over bamboo bridges. Small, shaded, photogenic and far quieter than the famous names.

  • Banyumala Twin Waterfall

Two parallel falls into a shallow turquoise pool surrounded by ferns, near Lake Buyan. A 10–15 minute descent and the best swimming of any waterfall on the island.

  • Tibumana & Kanto Lampo

Two Gianyar favourites. Tibumana is a single curtain into a round pool with a flat easy path; Kanto Lampo cascades over stepped rock you can climb for the classic photo. Both are close to Ubud and inexpensive.

  • Nungnung Waterfall

A thundering 50-metre drop in the central highlands, at the bottom of 509 concrete steps. Spectacular, powerful and a serious climb back up — bring water.

Sample itinerary

A guide, not a timetable. Your driver reshapes the order around the weather, the crowds and how you are feeling on the day.

  1. 07:30

    Hotel pickup

Early start, especially for the northern falls. Your driver will confirm the plan and swap stops if the forecast looks wet.

  2. 09:00

    First waterfall

Tegenungan or Tibumana if you are staying south, or straight on towards Leke Leke and the north if Sekumpul is the goal.

  3. 10:30

    Coffee and rice terraces

Break at a plantation or the Jatiluwih terraces to dry off and let your legs recover between treks.

  4. 12:00

    Lunch

Local warung or a restaurant with a valley view, matched to your budget and dietary needs.

  5. 13:30

    Main waterfall of the day

The big one: Sekumpul with a local guide, or Banyumala for swimming, or Leke Leke for photos. Allow 2–3 hours including the walk.

  6. 16:00

    Optional third stop

A quick easy fall, a lake viewpoint at Wanagiri or the Ulun Danu Beratan temple on the way home.

  7. 18:00–19:00

    Hotel drop-off

Back at your accommodation. Northern routes return later; we will give you a realistic time before you book.

Leke Leke, reached by bamboo bridges.

  • Banyumala twin waterfall in north Bali with two cascades and a turquoise swimming pool

  • Steep jungle staircase and river crossing on the trek to Sekumpul waterfall in north Bali

The Sekumpul trek: worth it, but earn it first.

Honest advice from your driver

  • Shoes with grip, always. Wet volcanic rock and moss are slipperier than they look and flip-flops cause most waterfall injuries.
  • Go in the morning. Rivers are clearer before afternoon rain, the light reaches into the gorges and the paths are quieter.
  • Bring a dry bag, a microfibre towel and a change of clothes. Nobody enjoys a two-hour drive in a wet swimsuit.
  • In the wet season the falls are at their most powerful but the water is brown and swimming can be closed. In the dry season the water is clear but the flow is thinner.
  • Drones are banned or restricted at most managed waterfalls — ask at the ticket booth before you launch anything.

Good to know

Waterfalls — frequently asked questions

The questions our guests ask most about this trip, answered honestly rather than optimistically.

Which waterfall should I choose if I only have time for one?

Staying in the south and short on time: Tegenungan, because it is big, easy to reach and has a real swimming pool. Fit, with a full day available and wanting the most beautiful: Sekumpul. Wanting photos with the least effort: Leke Leke. Travelling with children: Tibumana, thanks to the flat path and calm pool.

How hard is the trek to Sekumpul waterfall?

It is the hardest popular waterfall in Bali. From the ticket office you take a scooter shuttle or walk 20 minutes, descend a long steep staircase of several hundred steps, then wade a river before the final viewpoint. Round trip is 1.5–2 hours and the climb back up is demanding in the heat. Skip it if you have knee problems or are not confident on uneven ground.

Can I swim at Bali’s waterfalls?

At many of them, yes. Banyumala, Tibumana and Tegenungan all have proper swimming pools. Sekumpul and Nungnung have strong currents and falling water, where swimming is limited to the shallow edges. After heavy rain, swimming may be closed at any of them — please respect the rangers’ decision, as flash floods are a real risk in these gorges.

How many waterfalls can we realistically see in one day?

Two or three. Two if one of them is Sekumpul or Nungnung, since the treks eat time and energy. Three is comfortable if they are all easy southern falls near Ubud. Itineraries promising five waterfalls in a day are selling you car park photos and a lot of driving.

What are the entrance fees, and who pays them?

Fees are paid on site per person and range from IDR 20,000 at small local falls to around IDR 125,000 at Sekumpul including the local guide. Budget IDR 100,000–250,000 per person for a full waterfall day. They are not included in our car and driver price, and your driver will tell you the current rate before you buy a ticket.

Is the wet season a bad time for a waterfall tour?

Not at all — it is arguably the best time, because the falls are at full power. The trade-offs are muddier paths, browner water and a higher chance of the swimming areas being closed. We start earlier in the wet season since the heavy rain usually arrives mid-afternoon.

Are there toilets, changing rooms and lockers?

The managed waterfalls — Tegenungan, Sekumpul, Leke Leke, Nungnung — have toilets, basic changing rooms and paid lockers near the entrance, costing IDR 5,000–20,000. The smaller local falls may only have a toilet at the ticket booth, so change in the car with a sarong, which is what everyone here does.

Can we combine waterfalls with Ubud, the swings or a temple?

Easily, if you stay in the south-central area. A classic day is Tegenungan, a jungle swing, the rice terraces and Ubud town. If Sekumpul is on the list, the drive north fills the day, though Ulun Danu Beratan temple and the Wanagiri viewpoints fit on the way back.

How do I book, and do I have to pay a deposit?

Send a WhatsApp message to +62 852 3773 9888 with your date, hotel or villa area, number of passengers and the tour you want. You get a fixed quote back, usually within 15 minutes. No deposit and no credit card are needed — you pay the driver in cash or by bank transfer on the day of the trip.

Do your drivers really speak English and Japanese?

Yes. Every driver speaks conversational English, and we have drivers who speak Japanese (日本語対応). Japanese-speaking drivers are a smaller team, so please mention it when you book so we can reserve the right person for your date.

Is hotel or villa pickup included, and which areas do you cover?

Pickup and drop-off are included from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. Pickups from Uluwatu, Amed, Candidasa, Lovina or Munduk are possible with a small surcharge for the extra distance — just ask when you book.

What happens if it rains or my flight is delayed?

Bali rain usually passes within an hour, so we simply reorder the stops and wait it out somewhere dry rather than cancel. For airport pickups we track your flight number and wait free of charge if you land late. Cancelling for genuine bad weather or a missed flight carries no fee.
