Ayung River Rafting

Two hours of class II–III rapids through the Ubud jungle gorge

  • 6–7 hours including transfers
  • From IDR 700,000 per person
  • English & 日本語

About this tour

The Ayung is Bali’s classic rafting river: a 10–12 km run through a deep jungle gorge north of Ubud, with around 30 class II–III rapids, waterfalls dropping straight into the river and huge stone reliefs carved into the cliff walls by local artists.

It is exciting without being frightening. Families with children from seven, complete beginners and nervous first-timers all do this trip comfortably, because the rapids are lively but forgiving and every raft has a certified guide steering from the back.

Everything is organised: gear, guide, lockers, hot showers and a buffet lunch at the top of the gorge. Your driver handles the transfer, waits through the trip with your dry clothes and can add an ATV ride or a swing to make it a full day.

What you will see

  • Thirty-plus rapids

Class II and III water spread over 10–12 km — enough to soak everyone in the raft and get people shouting, without anything technical or genuinely dangerous.

  • Cliff stone carvings

Midway down the gorge, the guides pull over at a wall of Ramayana reliefs hand-carved into the rock face by local sculptors. Unexpected, beautiful, and only visible from the river.

  • Jungle waterfalls

Several small falls drop straight into the Ayung from the gorge walls, and the guides steer the raft under one so you get the cold shower whether you wanted it or not.

  • Buffet lunch over the gorge

An Indonesian buffet at the finish point, on a terrace looking down over the river you just paddled. Hot showers, towels and lockers included.

  • Telaga Waja alternative

For thrill-seekers: a faster class III–IV river in east Bali with continuous rapids and a 4-metre drop at the end. Longer drive, more adrenaline, minimum age 12.

Sample itinerary

A guide, not a timetable. Your driver reshapes the order around the weather, the crowds and how you are feeling on the day.

  1. 08:00

    Hotel pickup

Morning pickup for the 10:00 rafting slot, when the water is calm and the gorge is still cool and shaded.

  2. 09:30

Check in at the rafting base

Welcome drink, registration and a locker for your valuables. Change into clothes you do not mind ruining.

  3. 10:00

    Safety briefing and gear

Helmet, buoyancy aid and paddle, then a full briefing on paddle commands, what to do if you fall out and how to sit in the raft.

  4. 10:20

    Descend to the river

About 350 steps down through the gorge past rice terraces and a small temple. Take it slowly; the steps can be wet.

  5. 10:45

    On the water

Two to two and a half hours downstream with your guide: rapids, calm stretches for swimming, the carved cliff wall and the waterfall shower.

  6. 13:00

    Finish, shower and lunch

Climb the stairs to the finish point (around 500 steps, taken at your own pace), hot shower, then buffet lunch on the terrace.

  7. 14:30

    Optional afternoon stop

Add a jungle swing, Tegenungan waterfall or Ubud town on the way home, or go straight back for a rest.

  8. 16:00

    Hotel drop-off

Back at your hotel or villa, pleasantly exhausted.

Honest advice from your driver

  • Wear a swimsuit with a t-shirt and shorts over it, plus sandals with a heel strap or water shoes. Leave loose flip-flops in the locker.
  • Put sunglasses on a retainer strap or leave them behind. The river takes several pairs a week.
  • Bring a full change of clothes and a towel for the car, even though showers are provided.
  • Keep your phone in the locker, not in your pocket. Guides carry waterproof cameras and the photos are usually worth buying.
  • The stairs at the end are the hardest part of the day for most people. Save some water for the climb and take it in stages.

Good to know

River Rafting — frequently asked questions

The questions our guests ask most about this trip, answered honestly rather than optimistically.

Do I need to know how to swim to go rafting on the Ayung?

No. You wear a buoyancy aid and a helmet at all times, and your guide is trained in river rescue. Plenty of non-swimmers raft the Ayung every day. Tell your guide before you set off so he seats you in the middle of the raft and keeps an eye on you in the rapids.

What is the minimum and maximum age for Ayung river rafting?

Operators on the Ayung accept children from 7 years and adults up to around 65, subject to reasonable health and mobility — the staircases matter as much as the rapids. Telaga Waja, the harder river, starts at 12. If you are outside these ranges, message us and we will check with the operator directly rather than guess.

How safe is white water rafting in Bali?

The Ayung is class II–III, which is the family end of the scale. Rafts are guided by certified river guides, safety kayaks patrol busy sections, gear is inspected and the operator carries accident insurance. Bumps and bruises from the raft happen; serious incidents are very rare. The steep staircases cause more slips than the river does.

What should I wear and bring?

A swimsuit with a t-shirt and shorts, sandals with a heel strap or water shoes, and a full change of dry clothes and a towel for afterwards. Sunscreen before you set off. Everything else — wallet, phone, passport, jewellery — goes in the locker at the base.

Is lunch included and are vegetarian options available?

Yes. An Indonesian buffet lunch at the finish point is included, and there are always vegetarian dishes. Tell us about vegan, halal, gluten-free or allergy requirements when you book and we will confirm with the operator in advance.

How many steps are there, really?

Roughly 350 steps down to the put-in point and about 500 up at the take-out, though the exact count depends on the operator. There is no shortcut and no lift. They are wide concrete steps with handrails in places, and you can stop as often as you like — but if stairs are a genuine problem, this may not be the right trip.

Can we raft in the rainy season?

Yes, and the rapids are better for it. The river runs higher and faster from December to March, which makes for a more exciting ride. Trips are only cancelled when the water level becomes genuinely unsafe after prolonged heavy rain, and in that case you pay nothing.

Ayung or Telaga Waja — which river should we pick?

Ayung for families, beginners, mixed-ability groups and anyone who wants scenery with their rapids: closer to Ubud, class II–III, gorgeous gorge. Telaga Waja for experienced or thrill-hungry rafters: class III–IV, continuous rapids, a 4-metre drop at the end and a longer drive to east Bali.

How do I book, and do I have to pay a deposit?

Send a WhatsApp message to +62 852 3773 9888 with your date, hotel or villa area, number of passengers and the tour you want. You get a fixed quote back, usually within 15 minutes. No deposit and no credit card are needed — you pay the driver in cash or by bank transfer on the day of the trip.

Do your drivers really speak English and Japanese?

Yes. Every driver speaks conversational English, and we have drivers who speak Japanese (日本語対応). Japanese-speaking drivers are a smaller team, so please mention it when you book so we can reserve the right person for your date.

Is hotel or villa pickup included, and which areas do you cover?

Pickup and drop-off are included from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. Pickups from Uluwatu, Amed, Candidasa, Lovina or Munduk are possible with a small surcharge for the extra distance — just ask when you book.

What happens if it rains or my flight is delayed?

Bali rain usually passes within an hour, so we simply reorder the stops and wait it out somewhere dry rather than cancel. For airport pickups we track your flight number and wait free of charge if you land late. Cancelling for genuine bad weather or a missed flight carries no fee.
