About this tour

Standing on the rim of Mount Batur at 06:00, watching the sun come up over Mount Agung and Lombok with cloud filling the caldera below, is the single best hour available in Bali. It costs you a night’s sleep and it is worth it.

There are two ways up. The classic trek leaves the trailhead around 04:00 and takes 1.5–2 hours on a steep volcanic path with a licensed local guide and a headlamp. Or you skip the walk entirely and take a 4WD jeep to a sunrise viewpoint on the black lava field — the same sky, none of the climbing, and the option most families and older travellers choose.

Either way your driver collects you in the middle of the night, waits through the whole sunrise, and gets you back for breakfast, a hot spring soak or a coffee plantation on the way home. You will sleep in the car and nobody will judge you.

What you will see

  • Mount Batur sunrise trek

A guided 1.5–2 hour climb to the 1,717 m summit in the dark, reaching the rim in time for first light. Steep, loose volcanic gravel in the upper section, but no technical scrambling and no ropes.

  • Breakfast cooked in volcanic steam

On the summit the guides steam eggs and banana sandwiches in the vents coming out of the mountain, and serve hot coffee and tea. It is a gimmick and it is also genuinely delicious at 06:15.

  • 4WD jeep sunrise

An open-top Land Cruiser takes you across the 1963 black lava field to a viewpoint facing the caldera. Great for anyone who cannot or does not want to hike, and excellent for photos of the jeep itself.

  • Kintamani caldera viewpoint

On the drive back, the classic panorama across Lake Batur and the volcano from the caldera rim road, usually paired with a coffee stop looking out over the whole crater.

  • Natural hot springs

Mineral pools on the shore of Lake Batur at 38–40°C, fed by the volcano. Exactly what your legs need after the descent. Toya Devasya and Batur Natural Hot Spring both have changing rooms and towels.

Sample itinerary

A guide, not a timetable. Your driver reshapes the order around the weather, the crowds and how you are feeling on the day.

  1. 01:30–02:30

    Hotel pickup

Pickup time depends on your area: around 01:30 from Canggu or Seminyak, 02:00 from Kuta or Sanur, 02:30 from Ubud. Sleep in the car — that is what it is for.

  2. 03:45

    Arrive at the trailhead

Meet your licensed trekking guide at Toya Bungkah, collect a headlamp and a walking stick, and have a hot tea before setting off.

  3. 04:00

    Start the climb

Steady pace in small groups. The first hour is gentle forest track; the last 40 minutes is steep volcanic scree where you will be glad of the stick.

  4. 05:45

    Summit and sunrise

Reach the rim before first light. Breakfast steamed in the volcanic vents, then roughly an hour on top as the caldera fills with colour.

  5. 07:00

    Descend past the crater

A different route down past the active steam vents and the 1963 lava flow, with monkeys usually watching from the ridge.

  6. 08:30

    Hot springs or breakfast

Soak in the lakeside hot springs, or a full breakfast at a restaurant on the caldera rim with the volcano in front of you.

  7. 10:30

    Coffee plantation & Kintamani

Coffee and spice tasting on the way south, plus the Kintamani viewpoint for the wide caldera photo.

  8. 12:30–13:30

    Hotel drop-off

Back at your hotel by early afternoon. Add Tegenungan waterfall or Ubud on the way for a small extra charge if you still have energy.

  • Open top 4WD jeep on the black lava field of Mount Batur at sunrise in Kintamani Bali

The jeep option: the same sunrise, none of the climbing.

  • Eggs and banana sandwiches steamed in a volcanic vent on the summit of Mount Batur

Breakfast steamed in the mountain itself.

  • Natural hot spring pools beside Lake Batur with the volcano crater behind in Bali

Lakeside hot springs, 38–40°C, on the way back.

Honest advice from your driver

  • Bring a windproof jacket or fleece. It is 10–15°C on the summit with wind, and most people badly underestimate this.
  • Trainers or hiking shoes only. The upper section is loose gravel and sandals are miserable.
  • Pack a power bank. Cold kills phone batteries fast and you will be filming in the dark.
  • Go to bed by 20:00 the night before. It is the difference between a magical morning and a grim one.
  • May to September has the clearest skies. In the wet season, book early in your trip so there is time for a second attempt if it clouds over.

Good to know

Volcano Trips — frequently asked questions

The questions our guests ask most about this trip, answered honestly rather than optimistically.

How fit do I need to be for the Mount Batur sunrise trek?

Reasonably fit, but you do not need to be an athlete. It is 1.5–2 hours of steady uphill walking with breaks, and guides set the pace to the slowest person in the group. If you can manage several flights of stairs without stopping, you can manage Batur. If not, take the jeep — nobody will think less of you and the view is the same.

What is the difference between the trek and the 4WD jeep tour?

The trek goes to the actual 1,717 m summit on foot, starting at 04:00 with a guide. The jeep drives you across the black lava field to a sunrise viewpoint lower on the mountain, with no walking involved and a later pickup. Same sunrise, different vantage point. Families, older travellers and anyone with knee trouble usually choose the jeep.

How cold is it at the summit and what should I wear?

Between 10°C and 15°C before sunrise, colder with wind chill on the rim. Wear long trousers, a t-shirt, a fleece or hoodie and a windproof outer layer, plus proper closed shoes. You will be hot walking and cold the moment you stop, so layers you can remove matter more than one thick jacket.

Can children or older travellers do this trip?

Children from about 8 years old handle the trek fine if they are used to walking; below that we recommend the jeep. We have taken guests in their seventies up by jeep with no problem. Please tell us ages and any knee, hip or heart concerns when you book so we suggest the right option honestly.

Is the guide included, and can I hike Mount Batur without one?

A licensed local guide is included in our price and is effectively mandatory. The local guiding association controls trailhead access, the route is unmarked in the dark and there are unstable sections near the crater. Trying to go alone causes friction at the gate and is genuinely unsafe.

What if it is cloudy and we do not see the sunrise?

It happens, mostly between December and February. The mountain does not issue refunds and neither can we for the guide and entrance fees already paid, but the caldera in cloud is beautiful in its own right. Our honest advice: book Batur for one of your first mornings in Bali so a second attempt is possible if the weather closes in.

Why is pickup so early — can we leave a bit later?

The drive is 2–2.5 hours from the south, and the climb takes up to 2 hours, so 02:00 is what gets you on the rim before first light. Leaving later means finishing the climb in daylight and missing the reason you came. If the hour is unbearable, the jeep tour allows a 03:30–04:00 pickup instead.

Can we add the hot springs, a waterfall or Ubud on the way back?

Yes, and most guests do. The hot springs are the most popular addition and take about 90 minutes. Tegenungan waterfall, a coffee plantation or Ubud centre all fit on the drive south. Mention it when booking and the driver will build it into the route rather than charging you a rush fee later.

How do I book, and do I have to pay a deposit?

Send a WhatsApp message to +62 852 3773 9888 with your date, hotel or villa area, number of passengers and the tour you want. You get a fixed quote back, usually within 15 minutes. No deposit and no credit card are needed — you pay the driver in cash or by bank transfer on the day of the trip.

Do your drivers really speak English and Japanese?

Yes. Every driver speaks conversational English, and we have drivers who speak Japanese (日本語対応). Japanese-speaking drivers are a smaller team, so please mention it when you book so we can reserve the right person for your date.

Is hotel or villa pickup included, and which areas do you cover?

Pickup and drop-off are included from Kuta, Legian, Seminyak, Canggu, Jimbaran, Nusa Dua, Sanur, Denpasar and Ubud. Pickups from Uluwatu, Amed, Candidasa, Lovina or Munduk are possible with a small surcharge for the extra distance — just ask when you book.

What happens if it rains or my flight is delayed?

Bali rain usually passes within an hour, so we simply reorder the stops and wait it out somewhere dry rather than cancel. For airport pickups we track your flight number and wait free of charge if you land late. Cancelling for genuine bad weather or a missed flight carries no fee.
